The mission of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is
grounded in the context of the mission of Duquesne University, particularly
its focus on serving students. Our primary goal is to instruct students in
the mathematical sciences, and more generally to enhance our students'
logical reasoning and problem solving skills. Toward these goals, we
strive to treat each learner as an individual, and we encourage significant
interaction among students, faculty, and staff. To ensure continual
improvement in meeting our goals, we are committed to supporting each other
as we seek excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Duquesne
University offers unique education and career opportunities for
students choosing a program leading to either a Bachelor of Arts in
mathematics or a Bachelor of Science in mathematics.
The mathematics program provides knowledge of the theoretical basis of
the field, appreciation for the intrinsic beauty of the discipline,
skill in interpreting the concepts underlying qualitative
procedures, and the ability to apply modern mathematical techniques
and tools to practical problems.
Mathematics students develop a basis for critical and logical analysis of
problems and the ability to design and implement creative solutions.
Students in the discipline have available to them specialty
laboratories with the most modern equipment. Mathematics students
use software packages such as Maple, Derive™,
S-PLUS®,
SAS®,
JMP®,
and MatLab®.
